Old Testament Verses

Genesis 2:25 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.

New International Version
25 The man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.

New King James Version
25 Now, although Adam and his wife were both naked, neither of them felt any shame.

Genesis 3:11

Adam and Eve first wore fig leaves to cover their nakedness, God asks them (perhaps rhetorically), "Who told you that you are naked?" The implication, as Christian naturists see it, is that the devil (in the form of a serpent) told them so. Furthermore, not only is God displeased that the forbidden fruit was eaten and sin had occurred, but also that they were now attempting to cover it up with clothing. No longer nude by their own accord, God made them garments from animal skins, possibly implying that sin requires a sacrifice.

New International Version
11 And he said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?"

New King James Version
11 And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat?”

Whatever Noah's "nakedness" was, it wasn't about sleeping in the nude in his very own tent, and then being seen by his same-gender relatives.

New International Version
22 Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father's nakedness and told his two brothers outside. 23 But Shem and Japheth took a garment and laid it across their shoulders; then they walked in backward and covered their father's nakedness. Their faces were turned the other way so that they would not see their father's nakedness.

New King James Version
22 And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brothers outside. 23 But Shem and Japheth took a garment, laid it on both their shoulders, and went backward and covered the nakedness of their father. Their faces were turned away, and they did not see their father’s nakedness.

Genesis 38:15 Does the Bible Teach Not to Be Nude in Tents?

New International Version
15 When Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face.

New King James Version
15 When Judah saw her, he thought she was a harlot, because she had covered her face.

Exodus 22:26-27 The Law of Moses - It's OK to be Nude In Public All Day, But Sleep Warm

New International Version
26 If you take your neighbor's cloak as a pledge, return it to him by sunset, 27 because his cloak is the only covering he has for his body. What else will he sleep in? When he cries out to me, I will hear, for I am compassionate.

New King James Version
26 If you ever take your neighbor’s garment as a pledge, you shall return it to him before the sun goes down. 27 For that is his only covering, it is his garment for his skin. What will he sleep in? And it will be that when he cries to Me, I will hear, for I am gracious.

If God was really anti-nudity, why didn't he command all the Israelites to wear breeches over their naked flesh?  In fact there is no such commandment in the Bible, anywhere!

New International Version
42 "Make linen undergarments as a covering for the body, reaching from the waist to the thigh.

New King James Version
42 And you shall make for them linen trousers to cover their nakedness; they shall reach from the waist to the thighs.

Here the Lord is specifying which relatives counted as incestuous sex when people had sex.  This is not about family skinny-dipping.

New International Version
6 " 'No one is to approach any close relative to have sexual relations. I am the LORD.

New King James Version
6 ‘None of you shall approach anyone who is near of kin to him, to uncover his nakedness: I am the LORD.

1 Samuel 19:23-24 The Connection Between Nudity and Prophecy

New International Version
23 So Saul went to Naioth at Ramah. But the Spirit of God came even upon him, and he walked along prophesying until he came to Naioth. 24 He stripped off his robes and also prophesied in Samuel's presence. He lay that way all that day and night. This is why people say, "Is Saul also among the prophets?"

New King James Version
23 So he went there to Naioth in Ramah. Then the Spirit of God was upon him also, and he went on and prophesied until he came to Naioth in Ramah. 24 And he also stripped off his clothes and prophesied before Samuel in like manner, and lay down naked all that day and all that night. Therefore they say, “Is Saul also among the prophets?”

2 Samuel 6:12-23 King David's Nude Dance, and a Curse on the Anti-Nudist

New International Version
12 Now King David was told, "The LORD has blessed the household of Obed-Edom and everything he has, because of the ark of God." So David went down and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-Edom to the City of David with rejoicing. 13 When those who were carrying the ark of the LORD had taken six steps, he sacrificed a bull and a fattened calf. 14 David, wearing a linen ephod, danced before the LORD with all his might, 15 while he and the entire house of Israel brought up the ark of the LORD with shouts and the sound of trumpets.

16 As the ark of the LORD was entering the City of David, Michal daughter of Saul watched from a window. And when she saw King David leaping and dancing before the LORD, she despised him in her heart.

17 They brought the ark of the LORD and set it in its place inside the tent that David had pitched for it, and David sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings before the LORD. 18 After he had finished sacrificing the burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD Almighty. 19 Then he gave a loaf of bread, a cake of dates and a cake of raisins to each person in the whole crowd of Israelites, both men and women. And all the people went to their homes.

20 When David returned home to bless his household, Michal daughter of Saul came out to meet him and said, "How the king of Israel has distinguished himself today, disrobing in the sight of the slave girls of his servants as any vulgar fellow would!"

21 David said to Michal, "It was before the LORD, who chose me rather than your father or anyone from his house when he appointed me ruler over the LORD's people Israel—I will celebrate before the LORD. 22 I will become even more undignified than this, and I will be humiliated in my own eyes. But by these slave girls you spoke of, I will be held in honor."

23 And Michal daughter of Saul had no children to the day of her death.

New King James Version
12 Now it was told King David, saying, “The LORD has blessed the house of Obed-Edom and all that belongs to him, because of the ark of God.” So David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-Edom to the City of David with gladness. 13 And so it was, when those bearing the ark of the LORD had gone six paces, that he sacrificed oxen and fatted sheep. 14 Then David danced before the LORD with all his might; and David was wearing a linen ephod. 15 So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the LORD with shouting and with the sound of the trumpet.
16 Now as the ark of the LORD came into the City of David, Michal, Saul’s daughter, looked through a window and saw King David leaping and whirling before the LORD; and she despised him in her heart. 17 So they brought the ark of the LORD, and set it in its place in the midst of the tabernacle that David had erected for it. Then David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD. 18 And when David had finished offering burnt offerings and peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD of hosts. 19 Then he distributed among all the people, among the whole multitude of Israel, both the women and the men, to everyone a loaf of bread, a piece of meat, and a cake of raisins. So all the people departed, everyone to his house.

20 Then David returned to bless his household. And Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David, and said, “How glorious was the king of Israel today, uncovering himself today in the eyes of the maids of his servants, as one of the base fellows shamelessly uncovers himself!”
21 So David said to Michal, “It was before the LORD, who chose me instead of your father and all his house, to appoint me ruler over the people of the LORD, over Israel. Therefore I will play music before the LORD. 22 And I will be even more undignified than this, and will be humble in my own sight. But as for the maidservants of whom you have spoken, by them I will be held in honor.”

23 Therefore Michal the daughter of Saul had no children to the day of her death.

2 Samuel 11:2-4 The story of King David and Bathsheba - Although David was rebuked by God for his lust of Bathsheba (a married woman), nothing was said about her nude bathing.

New International Version
2 One evening David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of the palace. From the roof he saw a woman bathing. The woman was very beautiful, 3 and David sent someone to find out about her. The man said, "Isn't this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite?" 4 Then David sent messengers to get her. She came to him, and he slept with her. (She had purified herself from her uncleanness.) Then she went back home.

New King James Version
2 Then it happened one evening that David arose from his bed and walked on the roof of the king’s house. And from the roof he saw a woman bathing, and the woman was very beautiful to behold. 3 So David sent and inquired about the woman. And someone said, “Is this not Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?” 4 Then David sent messengers, and took her; and she came to him, and he lay with her, for she was cleansed from her impurity; and she returned to her house.

Job 1:21

New International Version
21 and said:
       "Naked I came from my mother's womb,
       and naked I will depart.
       The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away;
       may the name of the LORD be praised."

New King James Version
21 And he said:

      “ Naked I came from my mother’s womb,
      And naked shall I return there.
      The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away;
      Blessed be the name of the LORD.”

Isaiah 20 A Prophecy Against Egypt and Cush. The Sign Against Egypt and Ethiopia.

New International Version
1 In the year that the supreme commander, sent by Sargon king of Assyria, came to Ashdod and attacked and captured it- 2 at that time the LORD spoke through Isaiah son of Amoz. He said to him, "Take off the sackcloth from your body and the sandals from your feet." And he did so, going around stripped and barefoot.

3 Then the LORD said, "Just as my servant Isaiah has gone stripped and barefoot for three years, as a sign and portent against Egypt and Cush, 4 so the king of Assyria will lead away stripped and barefoot the Egyptian captives and Cushite exiles, young and old, with buttocks bared—to Egypt's shame. 5 Those who trusted in Cush and boasted in Egypt will be afraid and put to shame. 6 In that day the people who live on this coast will say, 'See what has happened to those we relied on, those we fled to for help and deliverance from the king of Assyria! How then can we escape?' "

New King James Version
1 In the year that Tartan came to Ashdod, when Sargon the king of Assyria sent him, and he fought against Ashdod and took it, 2 at the same time the LORD spoke by Isaiah the son of Amoz, saying, “Go, and remove the sackcloth from your body, and take your sandals off your feet.” And he did so, walking naked and barefoot.
3 Then the LORD said, “Just as My servant Isaiah has walked naked and barefoot three years for a sign and a wonder against Egypt and Ethiopia, 4 so shall the king of Assyria lead away the Egyptians as prisoners and the Ethiopians as captives, young and old, naked and barefoot, with their buttocks uncovered, to the shame of Egypt. 5 Then they shall be afraid and ashamed of Ethiopia their expectation and Egypt their glory. 6 And the inhabitant of this territory will say in that day, ‘Surely such is our expectation, wherever we flee for help to be delivered from the king of Assyria; and how shall we escape?’”

Here nudity is indeed shame - but only in the context of defeat, humiliation, and want.  This is not a verse that is moralizing about personal modesty.

New International Version
8 Jerusalem has sinned greatly
       and so has become unclean.
       All who honored her despise her,
       for they have seen her nakedness;
       she herself groans and turns away.

New King James Version
8 Jerusalem has sinned gravely,
      Therefore she has become vile.
      All who honored her despise her
      Because they have seen her nakedness;
      Yes, she sighs and turns away.

Ezekiel 16:7-8 Israelite Children Grew Up Nude

New International Version
7 I made you grow like a plant of the field. You grew up and developed and became the most beautiful of jewels. Your breasts were formed and your hair grew, you who were naked and bare.

8 " 'Later I passed by, and when I looked at you and saw that you were old enough for love, I spread the corner of my garment over you and covered your nakedness. I gave you my solemn oath and entered into a covenant with you, declares the Sovereign LORD, and you became mine.

New King James Version
7 I made you thrive like a plant in the field; and you grew, matured, and became very beautiful. Your breasts were formed, your hair grew, but you were naked and bare.
8 “When I passed by you again and looked upon you, indeed your time was the time of love; so I spread My wing over you and covered your nakedness. Yes, I swore an oath to you and entered into a covenant with you, and you became Mine,” says the Lord GOD.

Micah 1:8

God Commands Public Nudity for Prophets Conducting Political Protests

New International Version
8 Because of this I will weep and wail;
       I will go about barefoot and naked.
       I will howl like a jackal
       and moan like an owl.

New King James Version
8 Therefore I will wail and howl,
      I will go stripped and naked;
      I will make a wailing like the jackals
      And a mourning like the ostriches,

Shame, yes - but status shame, not Western style body shame.  Else, why is the Prophet of God going naked in front of all of the people as a part of his mission and testimony?

New International Version
11 Pass on in nakedness and shame,
       you who live in Shaphir.
       Those who live in Zaanan
       will not come out.
       Beth Ezel is in mourning;
       its protection is taken from you.

New King James Version
11 Pass by in naked shame, you inhabitant of Shaphir;
      The inhabitant of Zaanan does not go out.
      Beth Ezel mourns;
      Its place to stand is taken away from you.

This verse is about getting someone drunk and engaging in or viewing some sexual activity.

New International Version
15 "Woe to him who gives drink to his neighbors,
          pouring it from the wineskin till they are drunk,
          so that he can gaze on their naked bodies.

New King James Version
15 “ Woe to him who gives drink to his neighbor,
          Pressing him to your bottle,
          Even to make him drunk,
          That you may look on his nakedness!
